Xing Yi Quan Bare Knuckle - Paul Andrews

Xing Yi Quan Bare Knuckle - The Importance Of Testing Under Pressure (Hsing I Chuan) - Paul Andrews
"
http://www.xingyiacademy.com

Here is an example of one method of testing your Xing Yi under pressure in a non compliant situation.

Bare knuckle fighting often results in fighting defensively and develops your respect for each and every strike. If you get hit, often that's the end of it, especially when you're training with a guy who's much bigger and heavier as wells as a skilled martial artist with a law enforcement job. Paul is around 5ft 8" 174cm and weighs 82kg (13stone/181pounds) Alex is around 6ft 2" 189cm and weighs around 120kg (19stone/266pounds).

Plus to a certain extent we are also trying not to kill each other in training!

A lot of the time it doesn't look like very much is happening but the reality is that you are testing the opponent's awareness and defence constantly through small shifts in position, height, distance. This results in a lot of small tests and movements as you look to find the advantage.

[Paul - watching this video back I've also noted a number of things I need to address when facing off against Alex. I'm a little one-sided as I'm trying to defend against his stronger right strikes. Sometimes video of sparring and training helps you work out what you need to work on too!]"

Bagua Staff system of Fujian's Pingnan County.

Bagua Staff system of Fujian's Pingnan County.
"
Pingnan county Bagua Staff methods.
In the reign of emperor Daoguang in the early-mid 19th century, Lin Laobao of Putian's Zhulin village came to Nanqiao village in Pingnan county where he taught this system of staff fighting to Lin Ribing. Lin Ribing then taught these methods to students in Guanyang, Yuanqiu, and Luxia villages. Among Lin Ribing's students, Jiang Chenghuai of Guanyang village was considered to be the most skilled.
Today the style is in it's 6th generation of masters and is still passed within the Lin and Jiang clans of Pingnan county.
This style of staff fighting places emphasis on footwork, training stepping to the left and right and eight directions along the Bagua pattern. There are three main practice forms, these are the Xian Tian Bagua Staff, Hou Tian Bagua Staff, and the 18 Changing Methods, as well as multiple two person staff drills.
In this system it is said that once contact has been made between weapons a master of the method can locate, respond to, and defeat their enemy from the sound and feel of the staff touching the enemies weapon."

Bagua Pole Exercises - Mike Patterson

Bagua Pole Exercises
Nearly 30 years ago I contrived and developed a series of eight pole exercises to practice and refine "ting" (listening/sensitivity) skills within the art of Bagua. In 1991, I filmed them and put then onto an instructional VHS tape and then later they were migrated to DVD. They have been "making the rounds" for the last two and one half decades. These are five of them with applications. The rest of them, along with the details of how to practice and train them, can be found on the DVD "Bagua Fundamentals" here:
